The Perfect Week in the WV Mountains

A week in the West Virginia mountains is always wellspent. It is impossible to see and do everything in one trip but we have tried our best to put together what we think a perfect week looks like.

Friday: Travel In

Stop at the Walmart in Summersville for any grocery needs.

Dinner at Maloney's Pub

Saturday: Richwood

Pick up a coffee from Rosewood Florist & Coffeehouse.

Shop around at local stores like Bloomfield Richwood Art Gallery, Lucy Butterfly Gifts, and Mill Whistle Arts & Richwood Heritage Center

Head to The Oakford Pool Hall for Dinner.

Enjoy a signature Cranberry Mule at the Sawmill Saloon.

Sunday: Monongahela National Forest

Breakfast at The Oakford Diner

Pack a lunch and spend the day in the Monongahela National Forest. Put on your walking shoes and check out several hikes. The Falls of Hills Creek (1.4 miles roundtrip), The Cranberry Glades (1/4 mile boardwalk), and High Rocks(3 miles round trip) are all show stopping.

For dinner, call in a pizza at Hole in the Wall (304)846-0141.

Monday: Highland Scenic Highway

Eat in for breakfast and enjoy coffee on the deck. Soak in the full morning sun.

Take a rest day from hiking and go for a drive on the Highland Scenic Highway. Be sure to stop at all the overlooks and visit the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center (open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday-Monday).

Drive this loop and grab a late lunch/early dinner at the riverfront Greenbrier Grille and Lodge in Marlinton.

Tuesday: North Fork of the Cherry

Breakfast in.

Grab a coffee from Rosewood and head to the Cherry Hill Country Club for a round of golf.

Lunch at the clubhouse. Casual attire is just fine.

If the sun warmed you up, go for a swim at Rudolph Falls or North Bend Picnic Area

Turn on the antique radio turned bluetooth speaker and make some dinner at the basecamp.

Wednesday: New River Gorge National Park

Breakfast at Sam's Diner

Head to New River Gorge National Park. If you like an adventure, book a bridge walk trip, a rafting or climbing trip, or a mountain bike trip at the Arrowhead Bike Farm. Make sure you plan ahead as many of these have scheduled arrival times. If you prefer to hike, check out the Endless Wall Trail. It has been voted among the top trails in the country.

Grab dinner at Secret Sandwich Society before heading back to Richwood. Their pimento cheese fries are so good after an active day!

Thursday: Summersville Lake

Breakfast in.

Pack a lunch and supplies and head to Pirate's Cove at Summersville Lake State Park for the day. The trail to the water is a 3/4 mile trail, we recommend wearing hiking shoes for maximum comfort.

Dinner at The Chill Out Grill on your way back into Richwood.

Friday: Greenbrier Valley

Breakfast in.

Grab a coffee from Rosewood and head over the mountain to Lewisburg. On the way stop at Good Roads Bakehouse in Frankford and grab pastries for the weekend. Book a tour at Lost World Caverns to explore a natural cave system.

Then spend the afternoon and evening appreciating the food and drink scene in the area. We recommend visiting the farm at Hawk Knob Appalachian Hard Cider and the Briergarten

Saturday: Ghost Towns and Grist Mills

Breakfast at Lora's Family Restaurant in Nettie.

Head out of town for a day of historic sites. First stop is the Prince Amtrak Train Station, built in 1946 in the Art Moderne style (skip this if architecture isn't your thing). Next up is the ghost town of Thurmond

Lunch in Fayetteville at Wood Iron Eatery (closes at 2:30).

Head to the famous Glade Creek Grist Mill in Babcock State Park. Beautiful in all seasons.

Dinner at Compass Pizza and a drink at AC’s Lounge.

Sunday: Home

On your way out of town, grab a late breakfast/early lunch from Tudor's Biscuit World in Craigsville. This is a WV staple.
