Boat
The Cherry River - Richwood to Curtin
This is a great 9 mile stretch of class II/III whitewater with plenty of access points if you want to sneak in a quick run. Click here to go to American Whitewater for details about put-in/take-out points. I will note that while they say the put-in is at the Richwood Inn, this has since been torn down. An updated landmark to help you find your way to this spot, it is just across the bridge and downriver from Vickie’s Mart.
The Gauley
The BEST time to do the Gauley is the six weekends in the fall called Gauley season where the Army Corps of Engineers does scheduled releases from Summersville Dam. Gauley season is kicked off each year with American Whitewater’s Gauley Fest. This is the world’s largest whitewater festival and is held each year on the third weekend in September.
The Upper G - Summersville Dam to Mason Branch
This 9-mile stretch of class IV/V whitewater is without question world class, BIG water, and high consequence. We highly recommend taking a guided trip for your first time down the mighty G but if you creek boat on a regular basis and feel like you’ve got this, it is a blast. The Lower G - Bucklick Branch to Swiss
Similar to the Upper G, this 11-mile stretch of class II-IV whitewater is a ton of fun but still requires an experienced paddler or guided trip to complete safely. The Lower G is less difficult than the Upper but is still big water! Grab this link to the American Whitewater page for rapid descriptions and important updates.
